It's no coincidence that the BDA's mission statement "Committed to Excellence in Health & Safety, Quality of Workmanship and Technical Standards for the Benefit of the Drilling Industry and its Clients" puts health and safety first.
The BDA since its inception in 1976 has been driven by the need for continuous improvement in safety. The Association is very proactive in identifying & dealing with safety issues (see Current Issues) and publishing guidance (see Publications and Newsletters). It continually works with the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) to ensure that members have latest advice and updates on the issues of the day. Co-operation is provided to bodies such as the Coal Authority, and BDA representatives sit on British Standards and European safety committees as well as the National Specialist Contractors Council (NSCC) safety committee.
Getting safety wrong is no longer an option. Society, government, clients and the industry itself are in unison that the work force and the public should be protected from bad safety practices. A bad safety record is commercial suicide leading to exclusion from tender lists; client disapproval and legal prosecution.
The BDA's Safety Committee would welcome hearing from members and others on any subject relating to safety. Especially welcome would be instances of good practice; lessons learnt from incidents, and examples of bad practice.
