BDA Technical & Standards Sub-Committee – Precis of March 2025 Meeting

The BDA Technical & Standards Sub-Committee met on 18th March 2025 to discuss meeting key technical updates, audit discussions, and initiatives to engage with the wider geotechnical industry.

Key Highlights:

  • Website FAQs and Policy Updates – The updated FAQ section from the BDA website was shared and further input sought from the T&S perspective. Discussions were had on the potential to better integrate policy updates and LOLER regulation changes with members’ business and quality systems.
  • Daily Check Sheets & Driller App – The Audit Steering Committee shared a new daily check sheet for review. It was clarified this would accompany manufacturer-specific machine checks and be used during BDA audits. An app was proposed to streamline the daily checks if linked to driller logs.
  • Audit Quality Dashboard – The BDA audit dashboard was presented. No major technical non-conformances were reported, but minor issues around SPT rods persisted. It was recommended to reshare an earlier article/video on SPT maintenance.
  • BSI Standards Update – The release of the draft for BS EN ISO 22477-6 was confirmed, relating to geotechnical testing of soil nails and rock bolts, which is open for comment.
  • AGS, FPS & Ground Forum Updates – Ground Forum efforts focused on attracting newcomers to the industry through grants and signposting students to opportunities.
  • Any Other Business – Upcoming changes to LOLER were flagged, which the committee will review in due course. Potential student placement links via Glasgow University will be explored.
