The British Drilling Association (BDA) is releasing updated Wireline Safety Guidance aimed at improving awareness, understanding and compliance with best practice on drilling sites.
Wireline systems are integral to ground investigation, but their misuse or poor maintenance can result in serious hazards, including equipment failure, dropped tools, and personnel injury. The upcoming guidance will address these challenges head-on, emphasising the safe operation of winches, ropes, and lifting accessories.
Auditors will be empowered to assess the driller’s understanding of wireline systems through on-site questioning and visual inspection, including the condition of wire ropes, certification records, and the correct application of guards and controls.
The guidance will also reinforce the responsibilities of both the Lead Driller and Support Operatives, promoting a more proactive reporting culture and increased ownership of plant safety.
By shining a spotlight on this crucial aspect of site safety, the BDA aims to prevent avoidable incidents and support companies in aligning with current legislation and good practice.
Full guidance will be available in due course, with implementation expected to follow shortly.
