BDA Awards 2025 – Meet the Judges

The British Drilling Association (BDA) is pleased to introduce the esteemed judging panel for the BDA Awards 2025, a group of highly respected professionals representing a cross-section of expertise from across the ground investigation, drilling, and construction sectors.

Together, these judges bring an exceptional depth of experience, technical knowledge, and independent insight to the awards process. Their collective involvement ensures that entries are assessed with fairness, rigour, and a deep appreciation of the challenges and innovations shaping the land drilling industry.

Introducing the 2025 Judges:

  • Catherine McGrath – National Highways – As the driving force behind the Ground Investigation Framework and lead of the Ground Investigation and Archaeology Communities, Catherine brings over 20 years’ experience and a passion for safety and innovation. Her strategic perspective on major infrastructure delivery makes her a key voice on the judging panel.
  • Duncan Moore – Editor, GeoDrilling International – With his editorial lens and unrivalled industry insight, Duncan offers a panoramic view of developments, challenges, and breakthroughs across the drilling sector. His role at GeoDrilling International ensures he remains closely attuned to both operational and technological advancement.
  • Charlotte Woodhall-Jones – SYSTRA UK & Ireland – A dual Chartered Geologist and Civil Engineer, Charlotte has worked across public and private infrastructure projects including the East Leeds Orbital Route and Ebbw Vale Rail Enhancement. Her balanced project experience and technical credibility are a real asset to the judging team.
  • Jamie Codd – Mott MacDonald – With 25 years of experience in ground investigation and asset management, Jamie contributes not only practical expertise but a strong academic and research background. He is active on the BSI ground investigation and testing committee and is a leading voice in climate change resilience.
  • Riwilo Masulani – Mining Remediation Authority – As Principal Permitting Manager, Riwilo oversees ground investigation and engineering permits in legacy coal mining areas. A Chartered Manager, his regulatory perspective and environmental focus make him an invaluable contributor to the judging process.
  • Roger Bridge – Tunnelling Manager, BBCEL – A former Chair of the British Tunnelling Society (BTS), Roger brings decades of underground construction and tunnelling experience to the panel. His technical understanding and leadership within the tunnelling community add significant strength to this year’s judging cohort.
  • Nirmal Tiwari – Advisor & Mentor – Though now retired, Nirmal remains a committed mentor and advocate in the geoengineering sector. With more than 50 years of international project and bid management experience, his insight spans continents and career milestones – offering a rare perspective to this year’s panel.
