The BDA Technical & Standards (T&S) Sub-Committee met on 23rd September. The meeting covered a broad range of technical updates, industry issues, and potential communications to members.
Key Highlights:
- Radioactive Nodules in Mercia Mudstone – An issue was raised regarding the presence of radioactive nodules in Mercia mudstone. The committee agreed to review information and consider further communications or alerts.
- AGS Industry Survey – The Association of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Specialists (AGS) is resending its industry questionnaire. The BDA will be providing feedback on the draft questions before release.
- BDA Audit Quality Dashboard – The Audit Dashboard continues to show encouraging trends, with growing numbers of audits being booked and completed. Issues around borehole depth measurement using dip meters were discussed, with possible solutions such as tag/dip tapes with heavier weights considered. The importance of borehole verticality was also highlighted.
- Industry Recruitment – The committee discussed ongoing challenges in industry recruitment. This matter be discussed with the BDA Management Committee, with a view to forming a dedicated Working Group.
- 1030 Buried Services Standard – An amendment to the Network Rail “1030 Working Safely in the Vicinity of Buried Services” standard was noted.
- Bill of Quantities Responsibility – Questions around responsibility for Bills of Quantities were discussed, with the committee noting this should be defined by the client and may vary across sectors.
