June 23, 2026
The BDA Training & Education Sub-Committee met on 3 June 2026, chaired by Paul McMann, to discuss progress on a range of training, competency and education initiatives, including the Super Sector Scheme, route to competence framework, future training video development, bite-size publications and wider training activity to support the drilling industry.
Key Highlights:
- Super Sector Scheme – Route to Competence – The committee reviewed progress on Step 4 of the Super Sector Scheme, with discussion focused on the proposed route to competence and the requirements for both operative and Lead Driller roles. Members discussed the relationship between VQ Level 2, Level 3 and SSSTS, as well as potential criteria changes within the Route to Competence Framework. It was agreed that Level 3 should be targeted for Lead Drillers, incorporating supervisory responsibilities, while also reviewing the structure and hierarchy of Level 3 training.
- Lead Driller Role Requirements – The committee agreed that the Knowledge, Skills, Behaviours and Experience requirements for Operative and Lead Driller roles should be updated. A smaller working group will review and refresh the current documentation, helping to ensure that the framework remains practical, appropriate and aligned with the needs of the drilling sector.
- Future Training Video Development – Members discussed a number of potential future training video opportunities. Suggestions included a video on how and why to carry out daily pre-use checks, potentially using the Pre-Start Checklist as a basis and covering different rig types. Further ideas included a sample classification video, using any suitable existing “Life of a Sample” footage, and a dip meter awareness piece, which may be better suited to an information sheet covering water levels and related site considerations.
- Bite-Size Publications – The committee reviewed progress on the Rig Quick Reference Guides, with drafts having been circulated for comment. It was agreed that the style should be standardised across the three guides, with further small edits to be made. The final documents will also be reviewed from a branding perspective, with BDA logos, contacts and supporting checklist information included as appropriate.
- BDA Conference – The committee was reminded that the BDA Conference will take place on 21 October 2026 at the Institution of Civil Engineers in London. The sub-committees will provide updates on relevant areas of work, giving members an opportunity to hear more about current activity, future priorities and progress across the Association.
- Manual Handling Training – Manual handling training sessions are being planned for late September, with sessions expected to take place in Glasgow, London and Gloucester. This will support continued work to promote good manual handling practice and improve consistency across the sector.
