Driller’s Guide to Permits in Coal Mining Areas – Guidance from the BDA

October 23, 2025

The British Drilling Association’s Training & Education Sub-committee has issued *guidance around “Driller’s Guide to Permits in Coal Mining Areas”, which is designed to support those planning or undertaking drilling or piling works in regions affected by historic coal mining.

The guidance outlines the key prestart requirements for safely planning works near previous mine workings, including the need for permits from the Mining Remediation Authority (MRA), mandatory HSE notifications, and detailed risk assessments to address potential hazards such as gas emissions, spontaneous combustion, ground instability, and mine water discharge.

The document also explains gas monitoring protocols, alarm levels, and best practice for backfilling and sealing boreholes, helping ensure compliance and site safety across all stages of drilling.

This practical guide reinforces the BDA’s ongoing commitment to improving safety standards and awareness across the drilling industry.
