Geothermal Drilling Workshop Announced

February 26, 2026

The British Drilling Association (BDA) is pleased to support a full-day Geothermal Drilling Workshop, which is taking place on 10 March 2026 at ETZ, Blenheim Gate, Aberdeen.

The event brings together drilling specialists, well service companies, geothermal project managers, regulators and industry associations to focus on one of the sector’s most important needs: developing a practical, consistent approach to geothermal well and borehole construction.

The workshop is being organised by Geothermal UK, which is a not-for-profit industry coalition committed to building and promoting the geothermal energy sector across the UK. Their aim is to convene expertise, encourage collaboration and help create the conditions for safe, investable and technically robust geothermal deployment.

As interest grows across shallow systems, mine-water schemes, repurposed wells and deeper geothermal projects, the sector is working with guidance that varies in scope and applicability. To unlock progress, clearer definitions and aligned expectations are needed, alongside a realistic route to demonstrating safe and responsible well delivery.

The workshop will look at what that pathway could be. Sessions will introduce ALARP in practice, IADC geothermal classifications, available ground-source guidance and the OEUK Well Life Cycle framework, before breaking into groups to examine shallow geothermal, repurposed wells and multiple-string wells. These discussions will explore definitions, stakeholder roles, areas of overlap and the gaps that need closing to create a workable roadmap.

The objective is an actionable plan that industry, regulators and project developers can adopt with confidence.

Attendance is £25 per person. To secure a place, contact info@geothermaluk.org.

Delegates are also invited to the Aberdeen Geothermal Stammtisch from 18:00 to 20:00 at The College Bar for an informal gathering ahead of SPE Aberdeen’s Geothermal 2026 conference.
