New Wireline Safety Guidance Set to Strengthen Site Practices

June 20, 2025

The British Drilling Association (BDA) has released new Wireline Safety Guidance aimed at improving awareness, understanding, and compliance with best practices when operating large diameter wireline systems.

Wireline systems have become an essential part of modern ground investigation works. However, misuse, improper maintenance, or insufficient training has led to serious hazards, including equipment failure, dropped tools, and injuries to personnel. This new guidance directly addresses these issues, with a particular focus on the safe operation of large diameter wireline systems, such as GeoBor S.

The document promotes the use of readily available safety equipment supplied by wireline manufacturers/suppliers and reinforces the shared responsibility of both employers and operatives to ensure equipment is used safely and correctly.

By highlighting this critical area of site safety, the BDA seeks to help prevent avoidable incidents and support industry alignment with current legislation and recognised good practice.
